To celebrate Caudwell Children’s Summer of Sport, here is Marcus’ story.
Marcus aged 9 is autistic. His mum Emma, applied to Caudwell Children for a Get Sensory Pack to help Marcus with his sensory difficulties and emotional regulation.
When the Get Sensory Pack arrived, Marcus was really excited, the items were suitable for his needs and provided the physical outlet he required. The spiky resources offered the necessary pressure, while the multi-coloured fountain light calmed him and created a relaxing atmosphere.
Emma said “Caudwell Children’s support has not only impacted Marcus’ happiness at home but mine as well. I’m equipped to manage his sensory needs now.”
Emma also believed that engaging in sport would help Marcus to channel his energy and build confidence.
His mum, who is also autistic and has ADHD, competed in jiu-jitsu when she was younger and the sport really helped her to thrive, so she researched jiu-jitsu clubs in her local areas. Emma decided on a club and informed them that Marcus was autistic.
Initially, Marcus’ biggest challenge was developing his confidence. He hesitated to get onto the mat or stay for a full session.
Emma said “He used to run off when he was overwhelmed and pull me to leave. However, the coach was really supportive and allowed him to join back in when he was ready. The coach encouraged us to do a competition and Marcus was fully supported by everyone.”
Occasionally at competitions, Marcus hesitated to go through the barrier to his competition mat alone, so Emma explained to the officials that Marcus was autistic. They either had an adult accompany or allowed Emma to go with him.
Marcus faced his greatest challenge when he had to fight a talented opponent. He was scared and initially refused to compete. The officials gave him extra time to calm down, and Emma reassured him that he could stop at any time. Marcus then went on to win the fight, feeling incredibly proud of himself and winning gold.
Marcus has since achieved gold in the Junior World Championships and earned a grey and white belt at his club. He also placed second in the European championships in the new intermediate grey belt category and has competed in various other events. Later on this year Marcus will be attempting to reclaim his title at the world championships.
