Back in January 2024, Lily was diagnosed with Mitochondrial Disease, which is a rare genetic condition where the mitochondria in her cells cannot produce enough energy to survive. Lily’s diagnosis means that 75% of her mitochondria isn’t working, so her pace of life is slower. Unfortunately, there is no cure and, in the future, she could lose her vision, hearing and speech. However, despite Lily’s diagnosis, she remains a happy, bubbly and confident girl who shines bright in everything she does, and radiates potential.
Lily’s dad, Sam said “Everybody loves Lily and she loves everybody. Lily’s attitude towards life will carry her far and she will achieve great accomplishments in the future.”
To enhance Liy’s mobility and independence, her parents hoped to get her a trike. However, the cost was too high, and wasn’t something they could afford.
Determined to help his daughter, Sam applied to Caudwell Children for support with funding towards a trike, and found the application process straightforward and easy to complete.
Lily’s trike was delivered at the beginning of July, just in time for the Summer Holidays.
Sam said “Before Lily received her trike, she had never been able to pedal any other bike. This was the first time in 7 years that she was able to properly pedal and steer a bike. She was so happy that she finally felt part of the community and she was riding a bike just like any other child her age. She now calls it her ‘Magic Trike’ as it is just magic how easy it is for her to pedal.
“We now go to the beach regularly, which has a straight flat path where Lily can just go for it. It makes her feel free and independent.”
After Caudwell Children’s support, Lily has now discovered her independence and has a new sense of freedom. To see how we can help your child visit our Mobility Equipment page by clicking here.
