Fred aged 9, is autistic and finds some social situations extremely difficult. Fred is susceptible to peer pressure and influence at school, and struggles with his siblings. He will often be of a defensive nature because he finds reading facial expressions and social cues challenging. Fred’s defensive nature can seem like an attack to his sisters and this causes endless arguments. Fred’s family find activities that won’t be turned into a competition problematic and this often leads to a tense atmosphere, ending in a frustrating time for everyone. Fred finds school difficult, Mondays and Fridays can seem very long and exhausting for him and the rest of the family.
Following on from Fred’s autism diagnosis, Katie, Fred’s mum spotted healthy eating and affordable food sessions at Caudwell Children called Eat Well: Spend Less. Fred has problems with food, so in the hopes that these sessions would encourage him to try new foods in a safe space, Fred’s family attended together. Katie wanted to have some quality family time, while meeting new people with similar experiences and of course enjoying the delicious food.
After attending more family events, Katie booked Fred onto some HAF sessions (Holiday Activities and Food).
Katie said “It’s so nice to see Fred so relaxed, and so well received. The world around us can be cruel at times and Caudwell Children provides a safe space for everyone to fully be their own true self, and not to be mocked or laughed at. There’s no judgement or expectation.”
Since attending Short Break sessions, Fred has developed a real love for the charity and wishes that the centre was a school so he could go there every day. Fred’s confidence has grown and has made several new friends since attending Short Breaks.
Katie added “Fred loves his “Purple People” and we are extremely grateful for every session. I know it can be daunting entrusting your child to anything new, especially when they face additional challenges, but I can honestly say that I have never felt worried about Fred whilst we were gone, I only ever feel reassured, and happy that he is safe. His needs are met on every level and I would feel comfortable to talk to any of the staff about any issues should they ever arise. On a personal level, utilising the sessions has also allowed us as a family to use those three hours to spend some quality time with the girls, to do a bit of shopping or any activities that Fred would thoroughly hate! We will be forever thankful and hopeful that they may continue for a very long time!”
