Ezzy was born 11 weeks early weighing just 3lbs and as she grew it was clear that Ezzy wasn’t developing in the same way as other children. Ezzy was given a full MRI scan and was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy Spastic Diplegia at 18 months old.
Ezzy’s parents were told that she may never walk, she could be non-speaking, and that she would need the use of a wheelchair and full-time care for the rest of her life.
In celebration of “Summer of Sport”, learn more about Ezzy’s journey and how at just age 10, she became a two-time Dressage Regionals Winner.
In 2017, Caudwell Children helped to fund Ezzy’s life-changing Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery and after just three weeks, she was able to take her first steps.
Following the SDR surgery, Caudwell Children also helped to fund the last two years of Ezzy’s much-needed rehabilitation, this support allowed her to access weekly strength and conditioning therapy sessions.
Ezzy can now walk independently for short distances; she is able to access everyday things we take for granted like getting dressed and playing with her friends.
Ezzy’s love for horses started at an early age and have been her strength and a source of comfort throughout. She started horse riding at the age of 3 at Riding for the Disabled and started Dressage two years ago. Last year Ezzy started competing and hasn’t looked back since, becoming a two-time regional winner.
Ezzy said “Riding horses makes me feel amazing, they help with my sensory processing and are my best friends. I love the thrill of competing and the freedom it gives me, learning new skills. I especially love all the fancy clothes and getting ready. It’s nice to do something for me that isn’t therapy-related, it gives me a focus.
“My dream is to compete for Great Britain internationally or at the Paralympic Games. To other children dreaming of competing in Sports, I’d say give everything a try, you can do anything you put your mind to! Sometimes it will be difficult, but it’s so worth it when you enjoy your Sport and the excitement it brings. You can do it!”
