Communication Boards
Communication Boards
Caudwell Children recognises that children and young people communicate in many different ways, especially those with speech and language needs, that’s why we have created Communication Boards. Our Communication Boards are personalised and designed so they are relevant to a particular area.
Each Communication Board contains icons that children and young people can point to, allowing them to express their feelings and where they would like to go in the area, improving inclusivity.
Communication Boards can be used in:
- Schools
- Local Parks
- Community Centres
- Family Hubs
- Play Centres
By adding these icons to a space, communication with family, friends, peers and staff will be easier for children and young people with speech and language needs, allowing them to enjoy their setting even more. We can also add additional columns to the board, ensuring that all essential icons for that area are included.
We have designed our Communication Boards so they are easy to use. We ran focus groups with children and young people with a range of speech and language needs, which helped us to guarantee that the icons would be as clear as possible and can easily be identified from the image as well as the accompanying word. Based on the focus groups, we made a number of changes including; the icons, colours, the way the icons are sectioned and we added key icons that the children and young people told us were important to them.*
We are working with local business, WBC, who are printing and building the Communication Boards for us. This is a key partnership and WBC support many young people and adults with disabilities to learn new skills and build upon their existing knowledge.
