Caudwell Children has been a lifeline for families waiting for Autism Assessments, offering expert guidance and unwavering support.
Joey’s mum Louise shares their story with us and is a testament to the impact of our work.
Joey’s Story
Joey is a fun loving 9-year-old boy who showed signs of Autism from around the age of five. He loved a routine, was amazing at maths, had the confidence to speak his mind, was kind and caring – but struggled with friendships, changes to his routine, he also found loud places and spaces difficult to manage.
Navigating the Assessment Process
I requested some assessments in education – but found the process to be difficult to navigate with huge waiting times. Then I learnt about Caudwell Children – a purpose-built location where children were free to be themselves and could feel included and have assessments in a safe and secure space.
The Initial Parent Meeting
The initial parent meeting was quite lengthy and we discussed Joey and his early life, difficulties but focused heavily on his strengths – his “can do’s” rather than his “cant do’s”.
Joey’s First Visit to Caudwell Children
The second part involved Joey visiting the centre – WOW What a place. Inclusive, child centred, family focused with a dedicated team who went above and beyond to ensure both Joey and I were supported.
Overcoming Initial Challenges
Joey struggles with new places and people so arriving at Caudwell Children was a little overwhelming – we were offered reassurance, guidance and support to encourage and empower Joey to engage with staff, visit the different rooms and participate in all the requirements of the assessment.
A Safe and Fun Environment
Joey enjoyed the sensory room and the outdoor space which provided a safe place for him to use during the assessment day – it gave him time to process some of the activities and gave me as his mum reassurance that he was not dysregulated and able to enjoy being in the space.
We received a visual guide which helped Joey to understand now, what’s next and how the day was going to run. Staff were amazing in offering reassurance and adapting the day to suit the needs of Joey.
Efficient and Informative Process
The process from referral to assessment took 14 weeks – with the final assessment feedback given within 6 weeks of visiting the centre. I found this element very informative; staff were very knowledgeable and offered positive hope for Joey.
Support Beyond the Assessment
I have been able to access the family support and workshops which again have been really informative and have helped me to support Joey on his difficult days but also celebrate his success and strengths. I have gained insight into his processing and how the way I support him through his struggles impacts on how he overcomes some of his challenges. We have celebrated small wins together – and through the process I have learnt a lot about Autism but more importantly a lot about my child.
I couldn’t be anymore grateful for to Caudwell Children – It really is a wonderful place with dedicated, qualified, experienced and understanding staff who want the best outcomes for children who visit. I would recommend Caudwell Children in a heartbeat to anyone thinking of accessing support for children showing signs of Autism.
